The Sorenson VRS Assistant Director is responsible for the training, education and day to day oversight of the VRS Center in the absence of the center Director. The Assistant Director will work with the Director to maintain professional and motivated employees by ensuring interpreters demonstrate appropriate technical and customer service skills to provide excellent and effective Video Relay calls.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interpret between American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English
    • VRS phone calls
    • In-person interpreting as needed by Sorenson employees
    • Video interpreting as needed by Sorenson employees
  • Demonstrate full compliance with Sorenson standards and policies, FCC regulations, and the RID Code of Professional Conduct
  • Demonstrate full compliance with Sorenson Communications consumer service core competencies
  • Complete assigned tasks/duties, projects and paperwork promptly and within approved guidelines, as delegated by Center Director
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of staff and demands of the VRS industry
  • Enhance interpreting skills through continued education training
  • Demonstrate willingness and ability to complete additional duties and assignments on an ongoing basis
  • Train and orient all newly-hired interpreters according to company standards/protocol
  • Assist the Director with the roll out of new information / policies to VI staff
  • Coordinate staff and applicant video screenings
  • Coordinate VI participation with ancillary training programs
  • Assist the Director with day to day monitoring of staff by providing the following:
    • Plug-ins with VIs
    • Re-Education regarding call protocol and/or job performance as needed
    • Technical assistance and/or direction with equipment in the center
    • Support the introduction of new company procedures
  • Work with management team to ensure a collaborative environment in the VRS Center
  • Communicate effectively with others across multiple departments
  • Represent Sorenson Communications in a positive manner at all times
  • Act as the center POC by answering the phone and return calls as necessary
  • Support the Center Director, when needed, in all aspects of the management of the VRS center

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required

  • Demonstrate the ability to clearly communicate in written communication

  • Possess the ability to quickly learn and implement new and changing technologies
  • Work effectively in a team environment; receive support from and provide support to colleagues
  • Possess the ability to work effectively in an environment with oversight that may include, but not limited to: call monitoring, mentoring, and evaluations
  • Possess the ability to work effectively in a fast paced, dynamic, highly regulated environment
  • Ability to learn and work comfortably with Microsoft Office applications and technical equipment
  • Fast learner, self-motivated and positive attitude
  • Willing to enhance management and interpreting skills through continued education training
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule
  • Ability to thrive in a high-tech and fast-paced environment
  • Maintain, as applicable, compliance with any national, state, or local licensure and/or certification requirements
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic, highly regulated environment
  • Strong customer service skills


  • Management experience
  • 10+ years' experience as an American Sign Language (ASL interpreter) in a variety of settings preferred
  • Experience as a Video Interpreter preferred
  • Membership in an interpreting related profession association required
  • Sign Language Interpreting certification required

  • Physical Demands
    • Able to sit/ stand for a long period of time in an office environment
    • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, tools, and to handle other computer components
  • Regular and predictable attendance required.
  • Positive attitude, team player, good interpersonal communication skills and able to work across company departments.
